Default Help me build a decent gaming PC!!

I'm new to the whole computer building thing... and I have officially decided that it's time to upgrade from my old Dell. I was looking to spend around $600. I was reading through the "Best Gaming Computers" sticky, but it hasn't been updated since June so I decided to just start a new thread. If anyone would be so kind to point out some good pieces and links, it would be greatly appreciated.

With a 600 limit, i would suggest going the AMD route. Are you able to save some parts for your current computer ( if you have one) If so what are the parts, model, etc.

My current system is a Dell Dimension 4550, and the specs are...

1GB DDR (2x 512 sticks)
Maxtor 120GB HDD
NVIDIA GeForce 6200 AGP 8x/4x
Intel Pentium 4 2.0ghz
Everything else is what came stock besides the mouse, speakers, DVD drives and monitor.

Should be able to save the HD, I would upgrade everything else. Is there any type of game you definitely want to be playing in this near feature. Like Crysis, COD4, Assassins Creed, The Witcher etc, But going dx10 based card would be a wise idea.

Well right now I play counter-strike and Battlefield 2142. I would probably end up playing COD4 though.

The chance of failure on an old maxtor drive is rather high. I'd recomend NOT saving the hard drive.

the 7600 is a good card solid for cod2, css, lotr w/e, but its not going to handle crysis or cod4 well at all
