Default heatsink = fan?

I was wondering if a heatsink for a cpu is the fan, or is it something else?

It is formally calld the heatsink/fan. Normally you can call it the heatsink which is a fan directly on the cpu like you'll have in your pc.

The heatsink is referred to the metal device (with a bunch of fins) that helps to draw out high temp created by the processor by means of a separate device (usually a fan) which is normally mounted on the heatsink.
