I've been thinking about different resolutions for different monitors and such. I don't know too much about the difference between size and resolution. I've noticed that I've seen a few Mac Pros in some of my college classes connected to a 30 inch monitor. Are these monitors good for 1080p video playback? Or are they too big / not wide enough?

30 inch monitors are smexy. I have a 27" at home and it's pretty nice, and a friend of mine has a 24" and it's nice too. If your concern is high def, as long as the monitor carries a 1080p rating, then it's the current norm for the spec. After that, things like a good contrast ratio, backlight system (LED or flurescent), on-screen options, swivel/adjustment features, a solid / reliable stand, good inputs (and a variety) and integrated speakers if that's your thing.
