HD not found

I have a Dell pc, and today it started taking more time than it normally took to boot. Also I get a message about hard drive not found after that. I reformated the hd, changed it to another known working hd, changed the ide cable, and still the same happens. Then, windows XP loads even after it says hd is not found.
