Having trouble deciding - Dell Inspiron 640m or 710m?

Hi guys I have an old Dell Inspiron 1100 that weighs a tonne and its features are just a bit slow and out-dated for me. I'm looking for a new laptop thats light. I don't want a heavy thing. It's just for like school (word etc) and surfing the net, email and all that.

And I didn't want the laptop to be really expensive. I'm looking to spend $1600AUD MAX!! (I think thats around $1200US)

So yeah, which would you recommended out of the Dell Inspiron 640m (5.29lbs) and the Dell Inspiron 710m (4.1lbs)?

Dell Inspiron 710m -

Intel Pentium M 1.70Ghz 2MB Cache
(2 x 256MB) 333Mhz DDR SDRAM
12.1" WXGA with TrueLife
80GB Ultra ATA
8x DVD+/-RW Combination Drive Dual Layer
4-cell Lithium Ion
Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 up to 64mb shared memory
1.7Kg

Dell Inspiron 640m -

Intel Core Duo 1.66Ghz 2MB Cache
(1 x 512mb) DDR2 SDRAM
14.1" WXGA
80GB SATA
8x DVD+/-RW Combination Drive Dual Layer
6-cell 53Whr Lithium Ion
Intel Media Accelerator 950 Graphics Up to 224MB shared system memory
2.41Kg

Thanks heaps for any advice you have.

If you have another laptop to suggest please say! Just remember the maximum I'm willing to spend is $1200US :)

Also if you have either of these laptops please post and let me know what you think of them!

I know the 640 has a lot more feaures. but It's actually heavier than the 710m by 1.19lbs.

I'm just worried about the weight really. Is the 640m worth all that extra weight?

It does have a bigger screen and uses the awesome Core Duo. I say it's worth it. It's got more RAM allocated to video and that's good too. More memory the better.

That Acer is a power house laptop. OMG, I love that battery life. 4.5 hours?!?! That's crazy. My stupid laptop only gives me less than 2 hours. I hate it. I run it on AC power most of the time anyways, but I hate it when I go portable because power management is weak.

I should rebel against getting a Dell laptop because I got let go of the job. In harsher terms, I got canned. Stupid Dell. They can all go to hell. I will never buy Dell.

You're going to want the DUO CORE.

I just bought one last week. Mine weighs 6. something pounds. I know its heavy, but my friends is heavier... So I am thankful.

I got:

Inspiron E1505, Intel Core Duoprocessor T2300 (2MB/1.66GHz/667MHz)
15.4 Inch Wide-screen WXGA Display
1GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm
80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
Intel PRO/Wireless 3945 802.11a/g Mini Card (54Mbps),
Dell Wireless 350 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)
53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

The battery life is better, the processor is better (though I would up it to 1GB) and the Hard Drive is better. SATA (Serial ATA) is one of the newest technologies. Better than the UATA (Ultra ATA)... Just a bit faster...

Splurge for the extra money and the extra weight, you will be happier.
