Hardware Abstraction Layer Problem?

Hi. I'm trying to fix a client's computer. When he had his computer, he noticed the sound stop working. After rebooting the computer, it would not boot at all. I have tried using the windows xp recovery console using fixboot and fixmbr yet the computer will flash the bios logo and then sit at a black screen. I can however tap F8 and get the windows options dialogues, however, if i choose safemode etc it just goes right back to black. One thing i notice if I leave it on the black screen for about 2 minutes, the hardware abstraction layer white rectangles begin sloowwly progressing on the bottom of the screen. Once done, the system reboots and the process repeats itself. Any ideas on how to get windoze back up and running?

If it's an onboard sound chip, sounds like it's buggered. So it could be a fault with that, or another piece of hardware, which can't be recognised by the HAL for some reason. Or the HAL itself has been damaged in some way.

Your other option is to reformat, and reinstall Windows.
