Harddrive question PLZ reply

my western digital raptor makes a cruchesing noise when i open up big file...does that slow it down or take life off of the harddrive?

does it sound like its speeding up? like the harddrive is spinning faster? if so thats probably because the harddrive is working harder to open the big file. however if its a crunching/crushing sound, that cant be good.

like a crunching sound...like its hitting virtual memory which i think it is...i have Corsair XMS 512 right now so im goin to get another stick

Sounds like the HD is in Max performance mode instead of Min Acoustic Output...
