Hard drive trouble

I need help identifying a problem with my secondary hard drive. First off i received this computer from somebody and I have seen the computer and hard drive work. but once the computer wouldn't read the drive my buddy dumped it on me. Does anyone know what it could be, i would really appreciate the help

Look to see which manufacturer made the hard drive and then go to their website and download their bootable diagnostics CD image and burn it to a CD. Boot from the CD and run the diagnostic program on the drive and see if it discovers any issues.
