Default Hard drive reformatting question. Quick reply please!

I want to reformat my hard drive, but it says it needs to be dismounted and asks me if I want to force a dismount. What does this mean?

I'm am running a slave right now, should I unplug it and try again?

A quick reply would be great, thanks for the help guys, you've helped me out alot in the short time I've been here. Thanks

What does that mean? I tried unplugging the slave and it didn't do anything.
