Does anyone know if a hard drive that is used for stroage/games than doesnt get used that much but is constantly running on standby, is the read/write arm still hovering over the patter(s) or does the circuit board send the arm home (or safe mode) after x amount of minutes of non-use? I know that the hard drive is still spinning though i can hear that.

thanks

Ok here we go.
The arm the heads are mounted on is under tension. If it looses power it snaps over to the parking position. Used to be the motherboard had to send the parking command.
Head crashes were common place.
Modern drives are harder to kill. Thankfully...

As for a timed shut down look in the advanced power options for a list of options that are timed. As I recall the default is 20 mins.
