There are tons of stories about poorly packaged HDDs from new egg in particular arriving DOA. Amazon has a better record but I only buy ssds online anymore. If I need an HDD I run up to Fry's and pick one up.
Did the package say do not drop or fragile anywhere? Was the drive enclosed in an air pillow?
