Hard Drive Problem Help!!!!

i hav recently inserted and new hard drive into my computer using the IDE Cable so that the hard drive it the secondary master. now when the computer loads up it shows that it reconises that there is a drive there, but when i go into my computer the drive is not listed what could the problem be. i did not buy the drive i got it for free off a mate but it should still work shouldnt it, can some one plz help thanx. The Hard drive is made by Maxtor.

Is it brand new? Has it been initialised and formatted? Do you run XP? If you do is your XP file system FAT32 or NTFS?

the drive is not new i had it out of a friends PC and it has been formatted and i run windows xp home

Go to Control Panel > Adminsitrative Tools > Computer Management. Click on Disk Management and check it's status there.
