I have an old Samsung 40gb Hard drive from like 2002 and it shows as 58.5gb, Its capacity is only 37.2gb. It started to do this recently and everytime I delete a file it reappears back onto the disk but without any space being used and I can still access the files. I find this very strange, I ran S.M.A.R.T. on the HD and everything seemed fine.

That's an odd one. Two things come to mind.

Virus scan.

Back up any needed files on it and reformat the thing.

Windows won't reformat it even with the installation CD. However I do not need any files on it. Everytime I delete a file on it the free space increases. Funny thing is, the HD has a 100% fitness and 100% Performance on S.M.A.R.T. and every value is good.

That's one I never heard of. You delete a file, and the space increases. Sounds like you have a very confused hard drive.

Can you delete/format it in Disk Management?
