Default Hard drive format worry

When I formatted my new second Maxtor hard drive using Disc Management, it stopped at 24%, and a few minutes a fail message appeared. The drive appeared in My Cpomputer but XP asked to format it when I clicked on it. I tried the quick format method and that worked ok. I tried the original way and again, it stopped at 24%. Why is this and does it mean I will have problems when it gets 1/4 full? I tried the quick format again and again, that went ok.

sounds like you got a bad sector that only a deep format is finding. I would suggest booting again with your XP cd and go into the DOS Recovery Console and run chkdsk and see what that finds for you.
