Open up the hard drive, remove the platter/s and subject them to a very high magnetic field (degauss). Then cut the platter/s up.

EDIT:

You want to re-use the drive? Don't do the above.

Ya I want to give the drive to someone else who needs one, but need it wiped before I can give it to them.

Or else I would drill a hole through it and make sure it didn't run haha.

By far the best way to make it inaccessible is to take a shotgun to it. Did that to my brother's whole old system recently.

But if you still want to use the drive then DBAN will work fine with 3 passes. Crap if you really want to you can do 99 passes, but that is way too redundant.
