Default Hard drive cache

Hey guys, sorry if this is a stupid question but I was wondering what the cache of a hard drive does. I think its essentially like a buffer (so it reads in 16mb or 32mb), is this correct?

Intel E6400 @ 2.13GHz - Antec 900 (didn't pick the case) - 4GB - BFG GeForce 8800GT - 1.1TB worth of hard drives - OCZ 850W - Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
