Default Hard drive broke?

What would cause the hard drive to do this?

Old age. Considering it's an IDE drive, old age would explain it.

No it's not that old. The laptop is just over 2 years old.

It appears to be looking for the primary track.

Perhaps the low-level format was lost and/or a head was damaged and can't read.

Of course, if the drive is opened up (in normal circumstances), then your heads will have crashed and the drive is useless.
