Which graphics card for the??

you can tri and quad fire if you don't end up with crappy custom pcb models that only have one crossfire plug. You just need a good mobo to support it.

It doesn't scale too well though.

No, keep to single card if at all possible.

It takes maybe 2 hours to accomplish everything I said, and the 5850 will destroy a stock 5870.

Keep this in mind too. A 5850 @ 1000/1400 is only 5% better than a 5870 @ 1000/1400.
You flash to 5870 BIOS to achieve higher overclocks without needing to slipstream the BIOS. You will be able to do it in afterburner.

5850 @ 1000/1400 should beat dual 5770 @1000/1400 too. Cheaper, faster, less power consumption, better scaling when you upgrade, less heat, and no microstuuter or non-supporting games. I don't see any reason to go with 5770 CF in this case.
