Default IS this a good idea?

ok, so i was thinking...i got an extra 80mm Antec case fan...

so...why cant i just some how mount it ontop of my stock p4 940 heatsink/fan? the stock fan and the case fan do not rub, theres about 3 or so mm's of clearence between the two. will it hurt the stock fan to do this?

it lines up rather well, and i held it over the CPU for about 5 mins and the temp fell from 39 C to 36 C

heres what i mean...
(my cams got good ISO for catching a 2600rpm fan like that, lol)

AFTER

ofcourse this is only a fill in idea till i get around to getting a good heatsink/fan.

any recommendations on a good sink/fan btw?

um not into doing extreame overclocking, but i do like my stuff staying cold to last a bit longer.

Wait...are you mounting it on top of another fan? Or just on top of the heatsink?

Mounting one fan on top of another would be a bad idea. There would be too much turbulence between the two to be effective.

I doubt it would do much. The only way dual-fan solutions like that work is if the other blades rotate the other direction like this Delta.

You'd be better off putting that 80MM fan over the northbridge.

This one works very well and is reasonably priced: ARCTIC COOLING Freezer 7 Pro

For a Few Dollars More: XIGMATEK HDT-S1284EE

I'd go with the Xigmatek, since he's on a quad core.

my budget is anything you guys be willing to pay for, for the performance.
nothing over 70 i guess? idk. what ever works great and will extend my cpu's life.

I know there are high priced products out there, that just dont do anything special.

my only worry some is that i may mess up the thermal grease or something when cleaning the die after removing the stock setup :/
