Getting A New Computer

wats up guys...first time posting....I need a suggestion here...my computer just broke..literally...i was playing and game and i heard a loud bang like metal broke....anyways...it wont turn on anymore...its a hp P4 512 ram 2.53 ghz....i wanna get a new computer, thats below 1200....wat should i get...first of all P4, or AMD???...and wat should it be...gateway, dell, VAIO....?????....i also saw some computers at velocitymicro.com....should I rather buy a computer online....would it be cheaper....or should I just go to a store and get it......PLEASE....ANY SUGGESTIONS....IM A BIT OF A NOOB WHEN IT GETS TO THIS!!!....if you think i should buy it online...can you suggest some websites

build your own, buy the parts at newegg.com and assemble them, much cheaper than buying a pre-built brand name one
