Default Get an old laptop hard drive to a new external hard drive?

Thanks for taking the time to read

One of my Toshiba satellite computers mother board failed. It was a shame to because that was a great computer. My current computer is a Toshiba satellite as well and the hard drives for the computers are interchangeable. My new hard drive is a Windows 7 and the old one was a windows vista. I have a 1TB Seagate hard drive. My intentions are wondering if i could somehow put the old hard drive into my new computer, copy the entire hard drive and operating system onto a partition of the Seagate external hard drive and be able to run windows vista off of the hard drive?
