I am looking for a free hdd eraser. I don't know if there are any good ones out there, but I thought that I would start here and see what you guys have to offer.

Cheers!

killdisk, you'll have to boot it from usb or something, its a DOS program, and if ran a certain number of times the government cant even get information off of it, we use it at work, its good stuff...

DBAN is the best method to destroy data and it's entirely free, just google it

The free version of that doesnt support the DoD Long data destruction method, for total data destruction you have to pay.

Dban is great, does DoD Long, DoD Short and the RCMP standard

I used killdisk on my hard drive before I sold it, but the free version only supports overwriting the disk once with 1's and 0's. It's fine if you don't have anything really sensitive on your drive. Try out the one that djchris suggested also.
