Default fps spikes...overheating?

hey i got an alienware laptop 2 gigs ram 7800 GO with turion 64 bit CPU, and i get these fps spikes when i use any application that uses my GPU (games, movies..etc..) it hapens about every 10 seconds, and it gets really choppy for about 5 seconds.then its normal...i have reason to suspect it to be due to overheating because for about the first 10 minutes of a game or movie it is smooth the whole way....anyone have any ideas? its really bad and annoying and id like to fix it asap...thanks
