are you using a usb or e-sata connection?
IF usb..make sure you're using the 2.0 interface.

I'm wondering if that external is overheating or currupt in some way shape or form. Is it possible for you to have a fan blowing on it? Otherwise try running checkdisk on it.

looks like over heatings. if you have a fan around...get it and have it aiming at the HD and trying doing the copy again...and see if it hangs.

its not a fix more of a work around.

try putting it in winrar in a multi .rar file and take it over bit by bit

No, there is no limit, I've done over 20 gigs before without issue.

Have you run checkdisk on the external?
