Aye, you could get a hard drive now along with a Operating system. Vista or XP? I believe you would have to get the Retail version though. I would however not transfer the files from one HDD to the other. It would just bring over the virus to the same HDD.

What brand is the computer? If you don't have a recovery cd, it may have a recovery partition. I know HP puts a recovery partition on their computers.

If you reformat or use an emachines recovery disc, it erases everything.

Not everyone needs to upgrade once their computer once it is 4 years old. My dad bought his viglen in 1999, and He was using it for nine years... I recently gave him my 2 year old P4 system - It's perfectly fine!
