I have an old laptop with an ide 40gb HDD.

Has windows XP on it and its been going so slow its nearly stopping.

The HDD light is on constant (no flicker) but i dont get much noise from the HDD. When it starts to work the HDD flickers and you can hear the HDD being read but most of the time you dont get this noise.

Im running Seatools on it now and its doing the same thing. Reading the data at a snails pace.

The HDD dont sound like its stuck, there is no ticking or rythmetic sounds so im a bit baffled.

HDD's slows down when they get older (you probably knew that)
i can't believe that you haven't thrown that thing out ages ago.

Ha, its a customers not mine. Would not see me with one of these lol. Unfortunalty paid £60 for it with a bogus copy of windows :(

im just going to install xp on another second hand IDE drive i have and see what it runs like.

My guess is much faster than it is now :)

I remember this from my workbook, most drives fail after 20,000 hours of use.

But this figure is very much guess work and should be taken with big grains of salt!
