Default F-ed up Diskdrives

I just reformatted this gateway my dads ex gf had, it almost doesn't read anything you put into the drives. Sometimes you can get lucky and have it read a cd. Right now im trying to install WoW but its not reading the disks, and when it did a few days ago it kept asking for disk 1 around 25% of the install was complete at the time and disk 1 was already, and no they arent scratched. What could be up?
