I have just connected an external monitor to my laptop. However, when I try to watch movies, I can't see the picture on the monitor, but I can see it on the laptop screen itself. I tried this in Windows Media Player as well, and the same result occurred. Are there any settings I might need to change?

there is a key on most keyboard's (normally called "FN") down along the left shift key and all the others in that area. While pressing and holdnig that, there will be an icon on one of the numbers at the top that has like two rectangles on it. (will be drawn in blue usually) By pressing that it will send video out to the external moniter exclusively, or both your moniter and the external.
if you dont see the icon i mentioned (as i know my description was kind of vague) just press and hold the "FN" button and press all the number keys. Normally this icon is on 5, so try that first.
