Default external keyboard on a laptop

im trying to hook a keyboard up to my laptop via a usb adapter. what im doing is hooking up my 19inch ws monitor so i can just have my laptop closed while it is on and i can use it sorta like a desktop. my problem is i can not get my keyboard to work. when i plug it into the usb port it blinks then nothing. it does not get detected. my laptop is a dell 1520 running vista home basic...

Do you have the drivers installed for the USB ports?

Sometimes when you upgrade to Vista (if you did that) drivers wont carry over.

Then, the socket might be out (try another)

or the keyboard is just bad. With me when I get that cheap kind of stuff, its a shot in the dark as if it will work or not. you get what you pay for.

i would take that out of the equation in order to isolate the problem. find a straight USB keyboard.
