Default external hd

i have just bought a wd passport external hd 250gb so that i can free up some space on my puter however when i tried to copy a video file it tells me that there is not enough space ???? any ideas please, also what is the best way to send the items to the new drive cut and copy? or via the "send to" option or just copy, obviously i want them deleted from the hd on the puter but the method i tried seemed to be copying files to the ext hd and leaving them on the puter.
help please
Bill

i don't know how this would help but is it set to slave. and also you need to partion space of to be used , go in to options, administrrator tools and computer management and partion some usable space, its under hard disks and bhit partiton.
