Default External Hard Drive??

I'm looking for a external hard drive because my dad has a ton of stuff to backup on his computers. We're thinking about a 160gig would be enough for him. Is this a good one ?

It appears that it'd do the job, but I personally prefer to wait for a product to be out long enough to get some longterm comments; the true issues of hardware will appear after some time and use.

It's expensive, ugly and low capacity.

Simply buy a HD and enclosure

I don't know what the prices are like in america, but I've found that external HDD prices in britain a 250 GB drive is pretty much the best size to buy right now.

£ per BG ratio is best at the moment...

if you get a 160GB drive then a 250GB can be bought for around the same price in some places, whilst going any higher means you are paying much more per gig.

well if he plans on keeping long time storage of stuff, instead of backing up on another hhd, i would have him invest in a cd/dvd burner. it was the best investment i have made. i keep everything from files to music to movies to entire backups of hhd's backed up to cd's and dvd's.

but if he's using the hhd for backup's and short time storage, then the extra hhd would be a good invest. i would shop around though, and get reviews on products. i have heard that raptor hhd's are good, but i have never used one.

although they are a little pricey, this the link below is just an example, and not meant to be that perticular site to buy from.

I think a few questions you need to ask is..Is he happy with that size ( actualy size not hard drive size) of external hd? There are alot of smaller external hd's around now making them easier to carry around. I guess its all just based on what he wants, would writing to data discs be easier for him?

Well i'm now thinking about a 250gb since it would be for long term storage, and it's not that much more plus it has lotsa reviews. Also it's a Western Digital. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136022

As for enclosures, they will cost almost the same as just buying a external hard drive.

He doesn't want to use CD's/DVD's because after about 3 years or so the foil that you burn with your drive will start to disinigrate and will cause some loss in the quality of the pictures on the disk. Or so he says, i'm still looking to see if this is true or not. Thanks everyone so far for the information.

I just read the reviews of that HD and it seems to be a good product. Im sure 250gb is plenty big enough, looks like a good investment.
