Is it IDE? You may have to set the drives to either master, or cable select. And what OS are you using?

yea... it shows up on device manager as Maxtor HDD. Just can't access in my computer. Thought it was a format issue, but it does not show up under disk management. Looked at manual and it suggested to go under USB mass storage - does not show there either. I have a different HDD to use and that one does the same thing.

The only thing that I can think of is a problem with the enclosure.

wait! never mind guys - it must be a hdd issue or a jumper issue... tried a third hdd and it works! any ideas on how to get the maxtor to work?

Those old maxtors can be a little difficult to get external power cords to work with them correctly.

any suggestions? their is an ibm travelstar i have also from a laptop with a laptop ide to standard ide converter... it worked with my friends hdd enclosure... but it is doing the same thing as the maxtor with this one.
