Errors after clean XP install

Not necessarily. Sometimes when you have a high amount of memory, the install gets "confused" and starts to throw errors. Cutting down on the RAM it sometimes helps it along. Once it's up and running, you can add it back in.

Hitachi Drive Fitness Test found errors on the drive. The bootable disk includes utilities to "Erase Boot Sector" and "Erase Disk". Should I try these? Or would they erase the low level formatting? If they do erase the low level formatting, how would I go about reformatting it?

Run Erase Disk.

Then try to run the fitness test again.

I also agree with reducing the amount of system RAM, to one stick. Untill the install is completed successfully.
