DVD Encoding

hi i have just got a dvd-RW and i am trying to put my AVI files so that there will play on a DVD Player, i have used a conveter to convert from avi to mpeg format, and then a am trying to write the disc in nero 6 as a DVD- Video Disc but when i copy the converted file it say invalid format and it is not suported.

can some one plez help me with problem, its driving me mad .
