DVD Drive not recognizing disc

I insert a dvd-r into my dvd drive, but my computer won't recognize the dvd. Yes it is a dvd and not a cd i'm putting in and yes i have tried multiple discs.

I tried rebooting and i just can't figure out why it won't recognize any discs.

Yes it supports dvd writing to a dvdr

It doesn't recognize cd's, and to be honest i do not own a DVD movie to see if that works.

go to start -> run -> type in "devmgmt.msc" without the quotes....then open the tab for your dvd/cd rom drives...find your drive...then right click and hit uninstall...now windows should search for it again and reinstall it...it's not actually really doing any harm or anything...if a balloon doesn't pop up saying that there's a device found then restart and windows will find it..and I'm assuming you are using XP...i'm not sure if that Run shortcut works in Vista...once you go thru all that hooplah then check a cd/dvd again and see if it works..let us know what happens
