Default DVD Compression

I have some dvd's ripped to my hard drive. I want to compress them to another format that will save space as well as still look good being played on a big screen using a media pc. What format is the best to covert to?

JogaBonito1502: I guess Microsoft is really not to blame. Sorry!

yeah divx and xvid avi's the best. If you dont want to go avi go for windows media video, they can be of a high quality aswell if you encode them right.
