Default DVD burner crapping out?

I have a Old DVD burner that came out of a dell computer I had for 3 years previous to building my current machine. The other day I went to burn a DVD and it kept giving me an error saying I couldn't write to it. So i tried a CD and it worked. I figure its in its death throws, and I am looking at a plextor, but until then is there anything I can do to revive it? I was thinking about changing out the IDE cable for a spare one I have but wouldn't a bad cable prevent both devices from working seeing as this one is plugged into the slave spot. Any other ideas or suggestions are greatly appriciated.

Try using a different dvd burning program. I used to burn fine dvds, but Nero has been just quitting on me randomly. This program looks promising, give it a try before chucking your old dvd burner out.
