Dual Channel RAm question

I just built a computer for my Dad. and it has 2 blue DIMM slots and 2 Purple DIMM slots. should there be equal amounts in each slot or can i just put like 1 512 stick in.

You can just put one stick of RAM in there, but to use Dual Channel-- you must have two sticks of the same speed and size RAM modules.

If you want to run in dual channel mode, then you will need two equal sized sticks. But it will run just fine with just a single stick of 512. Consult the motherboard manual for the proper slot to put it in. Some motherboards like to be populated in reverse ie, from DIMM 4 to DIMM 1.
