Default Does Stand By require any battery power on a laptop?

I was wondering if the Stand By feature in Windows XP require battery power on a laptop during the time its standing by. Anyone know?

stand by, or hibernate? standby means the computer is still on, which requires power. hibernate is when the comp saves your current stuff to the hd and shuts down, then when you hit the power switch, it comes back on exactly as you left it..requires no battery power.
