Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
There are no real advantages. Back then they couldn't fit all the Cache on the chips as easilly, so they used the slots for more RAM...that's what I heard, at least. For the most part, Slot1 is compatable with Socket370.

Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
Slot and Socket varies. Socket I believe transfers data better, although i could be mistaken.
A Slot CPU for example is the Itanium, and the announced Itanium2, a good Socket CPU is the Pentium 4 or Athlon 64. I don't recall any AMD slot CPUs.

Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
I used to have a Slot 1 Pentium III 600Mhz CPU. It was slow, but did what i wanted at the time, which was browse the internet and play music, until I started to game did I require a more demanding CPU and what not.

"Slot" processors didnt need cooling, neither did the motherboards, so you did get a silent PC..!

I actually have a slight vision problem at the moment. Currently my contacts are old and I can not use them for the time being, so it is hard for me to view my posts so I can proof read it once I post it. Infact posting in regular type is very hard to see. I have to get rather close to the monitor to actually view it, which in turn makes the vision even worse, lose-lose scenario . If it's a huge inconvience I'll refrain from it if you want me to. Besides my new contacts should arrive in about a week or so once I get back from California next week.

Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
They do so need cooling. My PIII 733 get SOO freakin' hot! It actually was cooled by the PSU's fan in the original case, but now I had to strap a fan to it because it was getting close to overheating...
Now some of the OLD ones might be ok without a fan. But I mean my old PII266 and dad's PII350 both have fans
joxley1990 - There is a place for a HS on that processor. I know many old ones could run without a heatsync and/or fan, but many did reccomend it.

Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
I suppose, thats at 250ish Mhz, and does get a little hot, but not too hot..
I think that fan from the PSU did cool it a little, but they can survive without..

Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
I remember those. I use to have the original Athlon using the Slot A. They don't necessarily have to be fan cooled directly like the CPUs these days, but most PC do have some sort of cooling for it. They don't use heatsinks like the socket CPU we use. They have air ducts that goes from the slot CPU to the side of the case or however your system routes the air. I had a huge 120mm fan that did that.

Re: difference between socket and slot cpus?
slot processors are like a sound card. A processor on a PCB that plugs into a slot. Can it get any simplier?
