pci-ex runs video cards, which require a higher transfer of data than the older PCI slots. now a days you only use PCI slots for sound cards, tv tuners, ethernet cards(if u dont have one on ur mobo), etc...

pci express is a damn sight faster and only allows for video cards to be used!!
