destop speakers to hifi!!

Hi well im not sure this is actually possible but, as you know from your desktop speakers the cables coming out are the same as hifi speaker cable the only difference is that comp ones join a 3.5mm jack at the end. so i was thinking would it be possible to open the wires up and solder a extension cable on and then attach to the back of the hifi>

by the way i cant use jack to phono as my hifi in this room does not have a phono port!!!
