Default Dell XPS M1710 - Prevent 7950GTX Failing

I've sold my old laptop (well I'm awaiting payment) and I wanted to replace it with either a Dell XPS M1710 or M1730. After looking at both systems, I think its pointless paying double the price for an M1730 when its worse than the M1710. Thing is I will be getting the M1710 off ebay, it comes with a 3 month warranty. I have been reading lots about the 7950GTX Cards failing in the M1710, does anyone know much about this? Is it heat that causes them to fail? Can I assume that as long as I open up the laptop every few months and get rid of dust that it shouldn't fail? Thanks.
