When I ordered my Vostro 1510 a year ago, I didn't choose the built in webcam as one of the options. I've had a look on ebay and I have found the webcam module and new screen bezel to accomodate it. If I buy these would it simply connect to something on the motherboard or on the screen or something, or can I not do this? Thanks.

You can, but I personally wouldn't recommend it for two reasons.
1. You can take it apart only to find a jumble of wires, once you start unplugging you could forget and screw your entire laptop up, it's kinda risky.
2. Why would you go through that trouble when you can just get something like This That right there is the most expensive webcam, and I'm almost positive it would come out cheaper then the screen you're buying.
Is there any reason you can't just get a standalone webcam?

I wouldn't even definitely say you can - you don't know if whatever header you have to connect it up to on the motherboard exists on your model, and if it does exist it might be disabled (could be a number of reasons for this.)

As above though, even if you knew it was possible to do - I wouldn't recommend it!
