Dell laptop question

I hope this is a easy question for someone. My daughter has a Dell Inspiron 2600 running Windows 2000 Professional. Her problem is with the keyboard. The board has letters that also have numbers assigned to them, U-4,I-5,O-6, and so on. The numbers have become locked on and there is nothing we can do to unlock them. The keyboard also has the standard set of numbers accross the top. Please help us!!
