it demagnetizes the monitor, sometimes external sources like a magnet or speakers close to your monitor or the earth's magnetic field create other magnetic forces inside the monitor, which causes distortion of the picture. a lot of monitors automatically degauss when you turn them on, but also have a button to manually degauss which is more thorough
