Default defraging my computers

when defragmenting a computer is their a risk of losing the information on the computer, because i have had some hdd problems and im wondering about the risk of crashing. This is on my oldish computer, not amd 64 fx.

I guess there would be a small risk if your computer were to crash right in the middle of defragging, however, it most likely won't do any damage.

Nah it shouldn't. But I have heard a rumor that defragging your hdd TOO much (as in like daily or something like that) could actually weaken your hdd or do something to make it defective to an extent. I forgot all the detail, but I don't even know if it's true.
