Post DDR Memory

I was wondering since my mother board supports dual channel dimm. If I could buy 2 512 mb sticks of the same sort and still have it run dual channel? Or do I have to buy a kit that sales both of the stick together in the same package? Also what memory should I upgrade to? I have a p4 3.0g ht proccesor with 120 gig hd. Thank you
