Data recovery

ive got a 200 and some gb portable hard drive that i basically store everything on, from music, to movies, to all the pictures ive ever taken with a digital camera. and well, it stopped working, i pluged it in today and it says it has to be formated and wont let me get to my stuff, is there any way to get to my files?

are there any good programs i can use to recover the data so i dont have to send it in to get done?

I've had good experiances with a program called R-studio (google it).

it takes ages to actually scan the disk, but when I used it it was able to recover music and films from the disk I used as my media disk. and was also able to recover documents from when I was at uni, (I'd formatted the disk since then too).

it is paid for software, but it's not expensive, and I think it's worth it.

thanks for the help, started scanning, i think it might be a day or 2 before its finished haha. good thing my big hard drive didnt mess up or this might have taken ALOT longer haha

i had good results with "recover my files" very simple does good
