I've had good experiances with a program called R-studio (google it).
it takes ages to actually scan the disk, but when I used it it was able to recover music and films from the disk I used as my media disk. and was also able to recover documents from when I was at uni, (I'd formatted the disk since then too).
it is paid for software, but it's not expensive, and I think it's worth it.
